Review & Description

A secret so explosive, the church always insisted it was just a legend. Now it'll stop at nothing to prevent its discovery...

The coded journal of Benjamin Franklin. A hidden map. A legendary gospel. These are the first pieces to an ancient puzzle so powerful, it could destroy the very foundation of Christianity.

Once before, Joseph Koster unearthed one of the church’s most deeply buried secrets . . . and it almost cost him his life. But some treasures are too hard to resist. And as Koster puts the pieces of the puzzle together, he discovers something even more startling … and infinitely more deadly.

Now, along with a beautiful engineer, Savita Sajan, Koster must race to decode Franklin’s journal before it falls into the hands of those who would do anything, kill anyone, to suppress it. But in a world of secret societies, ancient conspiracies, and Masonic puzzles, locating the prize is one thing … staying alive, another.

For as Koster and Sajan are about to learn, the same key that unlocks the doorway to Heaven … could open the portals of Hell. Read more

Gospel Truths (Kindle Edition)
By J.G. Sandom

Review & Description

They have been drawn into a plot more insidious than anything they could have imagined—a battle to control one of religion’s greatest secrets. For English detective Nigel Lyman, it begins with the suspicious suicide of a corrupt Italian banker in London. For French-born Mariane Soury-Fontaine, it starts with the mysterious disappearance of her lover. And for American mathematician Joseph Koster, the search leads through France’s soaring cathedrals to the baffling labyrinths that masons once carefully inscribed in their floors.

These strangers are about to crack a code that dozens have died for, a puzzle whose power reaches back to the birth of the Christian faith, through the echoing halls of the Vatican, and to the dark, corrupt realms of organized crime. Now staying alive is the ultimate challenge. Because the next revelation is the most forbidden of all . . .

Review & Description

Residential Design Using Revit Architecture 2012 is designed for the architectural student new to Revit Architecture 2012. This text takes a project based approach to learning Revit Architecture in which the student develops a single family residence all the way to photo-realistic renderings like the one on the cover. Each book comes with a DVD containing numerous video presentations in which the author shows and explains the many tools and techniques used in Revit Architecture 2012.

This book starts with an optional basic introduction to hand sketching techniques and concepts intended to increase your ability to sketch design ideas by hand and to think three-dimensionally. The lessons then begin with an introduction to Revit Architecture 2012. The first four chapters are intended to get the reader familiar with the user interface and many of the common menus and tools.

Throughout the rest of the book a residential building is created and the many tools and features of Revit Architecture 2012 are covered in greater detail. Using step-by-step tutorial lessons, the residential project is followed through to create elevations, sections, floor plans, renderings, construction sets, etc.

About the Videos
The videos contained on the included DVD make it easy to see the menu selections and will make learning Revit Architecture straightforward and simple. At the start of each chapter the reader is prompted to watch a video that previews the topics that will be covered in the proceeding chapter. This allows the reader to be familiar with the menu selections and techniques before they begin the tutorial. Readers will feel more confident in what they are doing and have a better understanding of the desired outcome of each lesson by watching these videos.

NorCalMod: Icons of Northern California Modernism (Hardcover)

NorCalMod: Icons of Northern California Modernism
NorCalMod: Icons of Northern California Modernism (Hardcover)
By Pierluigi Serraino

Review & Description

Many people think modernist architecture never flowered in California north of the San Fernando Valley. NorCalMod dispels that notion in a copiously illustrated history showcasing extraordinary examples of its proud contribution to the Bay Area and environs. As a style, modernist architecture was hotly debated in its day (why create modern structures where such distinctive Victorian and Arts and Crafts buildings already existed?) pulling heavyweights such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Lewis Mumford, and Walter Gropius into the fray. Ultimately, that existing "Bay Region Style" would remain the area's architectural hallmark, but not before hundreds of important modernist projects, many still standing yet unjustly neglected today, had been established. The remarkable photos in this book open our eyes to a long-lost chapter in the history of California architecture and make NorCalMod a volume to be enjoyed by those interested in California history and style as well as by architecture students and professionals. Review & Description

In the successful Transmaterial series, author Blaine Brownell presents collections of materials that have the potential to transform the physical environment. With Materials Strategies, Princeton Architectural Press s next book in its Architecture Brief series, Brownell takes his research to the next stage by addressing how materials be applied to affect such a transformation, ultimately achieving design innovation. [Architecture has been shaped by the continual transformation of material technologies and application methods throughout history. Surprisingly, these approaches are rarely taught in academia or practice the former typically focuses on building-technology sequence, where students are given information about basic material properties and conventional methodologies. Architectural practice is worse: in the majority of offices, there is no established discipline or method for material innovation despite the widespread belief in its importance.] [katharine, this whole paragraph could be cut if this is too much, which I think it is.] Material Strategies is a primer on materials that goes beyond a mere description of materials. It provides insights regarding emerging technologies as well as their creative implementation, and presents a series of recent case studies that demonstrate successful realization of material-based innovation. The book is structured by a concise set of chapters based on fundamental material categories mineral, concrete, wood, metal, glass, and plastic. The introduction of each chapter describes the basic history of the material and its importance to architecture, a summary of previous building innovations and their technological as well as cultural effects, current environmental challenges and their future ramifications, recent disruptive technologies and their preliminary manifestations, as well as a series of disruptive applications exemplified by recent pioneering buildings. Architectural case studies are described with a focus on the significance of their particular contributions, and are documented in detailed illustrations. The primary attention of the book is on contemporary projects because of the ways in which these buildings deliver creative contributions related to present-day circumstances. Unlike many how-to manuals, the emphasis here is on unconventional and emerging practices. Moreover, unlike many surveys of new materials, this manual seeks to explain which new material technologies are most significant and why, how these technologies are being influenced by recent environmental concerns, the theoretical implications and conceptual debates one must consider, as well as the ways in which new material strategies are utilized to advance the architectural canon. Review & Description

A riveting tale of love, art, betrayal and forgiveness -- in which the illegitimate son of a legendary architect undertakes a worldwide exploration to discover and understand his father's and the personal choices he made.

Louis I. Kahn is considered by many historians to have been the most important architect of the second half of the twentieth century. While Kahn's artistic legacy was a search for truth and clarity, his personal life was secretive and chaotic. His mysterious death in a train station men's room left behind three families -- one with his wife and two with women with whom he had long-term affairs. The child of one of these extra-marital relationships, Kahn's only son Nathaniel, sets out on a journey to reconcile the life and work of this mysterious man.

Revealing the haunting beauty of his father's monumental creations and taking us to the rarified heights of the world's celebrated architects and deep within his own divided family, Nathaniel's personal journey becomes a universal investigation of identity, a celebration of art and ultimately, of life itself. One nonfiction film that truly creates a narrative journey, My Architect is filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn's engrossing search for his father. Louis Kahn, one of the most celebrated architects of the 20th century, died in 1974 and left behind a highly compartmentalized life, including two children born out of wedlock to two mistresses. Nathaniel interviews the members of this somewhat puzzled family, but his deepest experiences are visits to the buildings that his father made (such as the grand Salk Institute in La Jolla, California), culminating in an emotional trip to Bangladesh. Here, Louis Kahn designed a massive government complex, a soaring achievement (and fascinating paradox--a Muslim capital designed by a Jewish man). This film asks: where does an artist truly live? In his life, or in the work he leaves behind? Nathaniel Kahn takes an amazingly even-tempered approach to this, given his personal stake in the story, and the result is a uniquely stirring movie. --Robert Horton Read more

Review & Description

The 2008 global recession and the nearly universal awareness of significant climate change have begun to alter architectural thinking. Even though architects will continue to dream up seemingly function-free building forms for the most conspicuous consumers, mainstream architects are being asked to provide energy efficient, cost-driven forms that also delight the eye. The movement to preserve and reuse existing structures has gained momentum, and the incidence of new and old architectural juxtapositions has increased. Forward-thinking planners are advocating m ore concentrated urban density, in part to decrease inefficient use of energy for transportation. As this thinking becomes public policy, architects will be challenged to adapt historically significant buildings for new uses, often by creating additions to existing forms. Although not entirely new, architectural dilemmas concerning how new meets old will occur revealing issues that most architects w ho design new buildings have not often thought about. Historic preservationists and sustainability advocates seem to concentrate solely on single issues leading to aesthetically clumsy architecture while agency review panels and the public approval process continue to erode the integrity of building designs making the creation of truly excellent designs difficult. Reclaimed Buildings: New Meets Old explores these topics in depth, with a focus on architectural design. The book addresses the question of aesthetic sustainability given the new influences and design tools that have emerged during the first decade of the 21st century. It is written for practitioners as well as students of architecture, and includes examples and case studies of built works that have successfully wrestled with the question of how new meets old in architecture.
